The Vague and All-Encompassing Use of Healing

What is “healing”?

We hear the term all the time. As an acupuncturist in Sudbury, I work in a world of healers, am surrounded by them, and they range from massage therapists to psychics to psychotherapists. They are all so different, yet still fall under the same category.

Yes, we all heal. But what does this even mean?

I believe that language is important. I believe that specificity in words leads to specificity in action. Thoughts become words, words become action, action leads to creation. If we aren’t clear with our words, our creations will be messy, as well.

It’s interesting how resistant “healers” can be to refine their terminology. I worked with one last year.

“What do you do?”

“I’m a healer.”

“Can you explain exactly what you do?”

“I use energy to help the body heal.”

“How do you use the energy? Like, are you touching people? Are you using tools? What exactly are you healing within your client? Are you creating physical changes? Will they feel calm or energized after? How long do the results last?”

She didn’t like my line of questioning. I wasn’t being rude, I was honestly curious.

“I can’t explain what I’m doing, it just happens,” she huffed. “And everyone is different, so everyone responds differently.”

I understand that energy work can be subtle and enigmatic, but I think we can do better. We need to be clear, with our thoughts and intentions.

After treating thousands of patients for almost 10 years, I now have enough experience to accurately set up expectations with my clients. I know how many sessions it typically takes to reach a certain outcome. Of course, there will always be outliers, but for the most part I can meet those expectations I set. I understand that when you are suffering, you come here with a single question in mind: “Can this help me feel less pain/be less anxious/sleep/whatever?” You want a clear answer. You don’t want me to suck you into a dissertation about the mechanics of this medicine, in vague language that really says nothing at all.

The best “healers” that I have worked with and incorporated into my practice have been those who have been specific and clear about what they do and what you can expect to experience throughout the process. These are the people I gravitate toward, and these are the people who are making my space and practice reach a higher level.

Giver's Gain

I host a Facebook group full of holistic entrepreneurs, and it’s a happy, positive place. In fact, considering the cesspool of negativity that Facebook can be, it’s hard to believe how smoothly this group runs, considering that it has almost 3,500 people in it.

This weekend I conducted an experiment. I decided to pick one person from the group and ask everyone to tune into that person at the same time, to send waves of positive energy their way.

This morning at 9:00 sharp, I wrote a post to the group, asking them to focus all of their positive intentions on the person I had chosen at random. For five minutes, I sat in front of my computer, imagining wonderful things happening for this stranger today. Although we’ve never met, I had her Facebook picture, so I envisioned her face beaming with joy as she received great news, as a perfect opportunity came her way, as she finally got something that she has been really wanting.

I’m planning on checking in tomorrow to see how her day went after the reception of these positive vibes from hundreds of people, all at once. But what was most interesting about this little experiment was how it affected ME.

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I have a million things to do and I’m a little overwhelmed. My cat knocked over my lamp, jolting me out of a deep sleep. There seemed to be 500 tiny irritations nagging at me like emotional papercuts before I even made it to my first cup of coffee.

Nevertheless, I persisted with the experiment because I always try to do what I say I’m going to do.

As I sat in front of my computer, I attempted to clear my mind of all the clutter that had settled in. I forced myself to be happy, even though I definitely wasn’t feeling it at first.

After about a minute of making my brain visualize joyful images, I started to actually feel the emotion behind the thoughts. I began to feel the internal lift and elevated heartbeat you experience when someone gives you good news. I felt my chest open up and my brain buzz with energy. After five minutes had passed, I opened my eyes and realized that my own energy, motivation, and creativity had been sparked. I felt great!

It was a wonderful reminder that sending positive energy always replenishes the giver as much as the recipient.

More About The Soul...

My “official” title is an acupuncturist. I am an acupuncturist and hypnotherapist, in Sudbury, MA.

I’m still trying to figure out my unofficial title. But this is what I do: I find amazing, magical people with incredible gifts, and I introduce them to the general public. I’m sort of a mystical matchmaker, I suppose.

A few months ago, I met Laurie McSwiggin. I knew NOTHING about her, or what she did.

I wasn’t seeking her out. She found me.

She came to my office, and I instantly connected with her motherly, nurturing vibe. “I can do a reflective resonance session for you, to give you an idea of what I do?” she suggested.

“Sure,” I said, although I had no idea what that entailed. All I knew was that she could tune in to my “messages” remotely, so I didn’t have to take time out of my crazy schedule to fit it in.

A few days later, I received an email with a recording attached. I listened to it on the way home from my office.

It hurt.

I often tell my clients that pain is where the transformation lives. If you can’t connect to something that physically HURTS, it’s probably not resonating with you on that deep, primal level. Anyone can say anything, right? But when you feel that emotional pull, THAT is when you know that you’re on target. When you feel that deep emotional wound getting trod upon.

THAT is when you know that this information is legit. And that there is something there that is imperative that you know.

This information wasn’t all sunshine and roses, but it WAS transformative. It explained so many of my weaknesses, my fears, the places where I was stuck and couldn’t move forward. If I had to describe it, I’d explain it like this:

Imagine that upon your birth, a force of unconditional love was assigned to be with you at every moment of your life. It had the power of perfect clarity, and could bear witness to all of the decisions and incidents in your life that led you to becoming the person you are, as a whole.

And then one day, someone was able to talk to this force and to get the dirt on all of the things in your life that had set you back: false beliefs that were formed as a result of these incidents of your past, fears that stemmed from the energies you were surrounded by at various points in your life, issues that you weren’t even aware of, that were keeping you stuck in repetitive patterns. The goal of the session is to give you the appropriate information you need to get yourself unstuck, love yourself unconditionally, and push yourself forward into becoming the most pure and authentic version of yourself.

Yes, it’s as powerful as it sounds.

Soul Reading Salon

I am so lucky to be able to shape my business according to my passions.

I’ve always been fascinated with the soul, the spirit, the more mystical side of life. I’m open, yet skeptical. I believe in the possibility of anything and everything, but if you are going to make claims, you’re going to need to back them up if you expect me to buy in. I’m open, but I’ve seen a LOT…so it’s hard to impress me.

This is how my Holistic Popups got started. I wanted a way to introduce all sorts of talented holistic practitioners to the public after testing them out for myself. I will only represent the ones that blow my mind, and one of these has long been Lisa Campion.

Lisa has given me strikingly accurate readings for the past few years. What is love about her is that she is practical. She is SO grounded and down to earth…getting a reading from her feels like a cross between having a therapy session and a journey to the beyond. I highly recommend her.

And who better to do an event at my space than someone I’ve been raving about for years?

We created an amazing event. There was cheese, wine, and the perfect mix of people. The wonderful thing was that every question that was asked seemed to be significant for others along with the person who asked. People were invested in the information that was flowing through spirit, and no one left disappointed. It was beautiful.

At one point, a participant whispered to me that she wasn’t feeling well and was experiencing nausea. Nothing kills a party like a pile of vomit, so I began to worry about finding her an escape route. Before I could, Lisa randomly asked her to come to the front of the room. She had her relax in a chair and performed some energy healing on her. Within a minute or two, the nauseous participant had gotten her color back and looked a million times better. By the time she returned to the seat near me, she was whispering about how all the nausea had completely vanished.

The energy of this event was so high, it left an imprint in the space afterward. Even while cleaning up, I could feel the remnants of light, positivity, and enthusiasm left behind by all who had come to experience this event. THIS is why I love hosting these events , and I can’t wait to dive into the next one!

Becoming Magic

We attract what we are.

If you're a grump, you're going to find yourself hanging out with a tribe of sourpusses. If you are an angry person, you'll find yourself in one relationship after another that is intense and fraught with drama.

So if we attract the negative by embodying the negative, how can we embody the idea of "magic"?

We all want magic.

How do you become a magical creature?

It's not just about crystals and reiki and intentions.

It's also about bringing about good in the world, but with a flair of mystery, or the unexpected.

How many times have you been in a terrible mood, and someone randomly said the perfect thing at the perfect moment?

Didn't it feel magical?

I remember being SO bummed out over a breakup, many years back. As I was standing in line at a store, a man looked at me and told me, "You are such a radiant woman. Everything about you sparkles. Keep it up." It was such an unexpected compliment, and an energetic boost. I felt like I was glowing for the rest of the day. That was magic.

A few months ago I celebrated a birthday by myself. I ate at a restaurant, asked for the check, and was shocked when the waitress brought me a free dessert.

"How did you know it was my birthday?" I asked.

"I didn't! I just felt compelled to bring you a free dessert, for some reason."

THAT felt magical.

We seek out magic all the time, but we neglect to remember that we are also a source of it. We can embody magic at any given time, simply by infusing our own magic into the lives of others. Today, ask yourself how YOU can embody magic today. The more you resonate with the vibration of magic, the more you will call it into your own life.

The Karma Doctor

This isn't business related, but it's totally weird. Lovers of the psychic woo stuff will dig this.

Since I'm always looking for new talent for my holistic popups, and I also love this stuff, I've been seeing a lot of healers lately. Over the past few months, I've had six sessions of psychic/energy/karmic work. And the one theme that has blazed brightly through every reading has been an imbalance between my personal and business life, and a resistance to love due to fear of vulnerability.

My business life is on fire. My love life? I've got nothing going on. Over the past year, I have had zero desire to meet anyone. And I've been absolutely fine with that. I'm not bitter, scared, or resentful...I just feel like a switch has been flipped off.

My readings with a past life psychic and an Akashic reader both brought up trauma, but on different levels. One was focused on horrific past lives I've had where I watched my soul mate get tortured to death in front of me, or saw my husband/wife die violently. The Akashic reading was more about experiences I've had in my current life that trained me to wall up and not let people in, and to be comfortable in the safety of emotional distance and solitude. (There's way more to both of these readings but this is a quick summary.)

Two weeks ago, I decided to try this guy called the Karma Doctor. He sees auras and can read everything that is going on within you, physically, mentally, emotionally, and on a soul level. He claims to literally "fix" your karma by reprogramming your brain after he reads your aura to see where and why you are screwed up.

He had me lie down and he scanned my body with his eyes. His reading was incredibly descriptive and accurate. And he reiterated the same themes that I've heard before: the lack of vulnerability, being closed-off to deep emotional connection, being powerful in my business because all of my energy is being funneled in that direction, focused on continuing an upward trajectory, and constantly one-upping myself.

One concept/word that he kept repeating was the word "significance/importance." He explained that my relationship energy was stuck and walled off because it is embedded in my karma to believe that I do not matter to people, that I hold little significance or importance in people's lives, and therefore I will feel less pain if I stay out of deeper relationships. The fear of getting very close and open with someone and then realizing that I am not that significant or important is a major block. Conversely, that same fear has helped me in my professional life, because I've used it to go out of my way to become more visible and noticeable.

After he told me all this, he was like, "So now I'm gonna fix it."

"Fix it?" I asked, skeptically. "How?"

"I'm the Karma Doctor, that's what I do," he answered.

He did this weird tapping/slapping thing on my head while chanting, and that was that.

"Am I supposed to feel anything after this?" he asked.

"You'll notice a change within the next few months. Your aura already looks totally different. I think you'll respond quickly. Just pay attention, you'll start to notice things."

So I left and chalked it up to yet another bizarre experience that may or may not go into the book I'm writing.

Then, today, I woke up and went to my fridge to get some water, and this is what I found...

I live alone.

Granted, I do have a cleaning person (that I've never met) who was here yesterday, but how weird is this?
