Happy Cinco de Mayo! To be honest I'm not sure what Cinco de Mayo is really a celebration of, aside from drunkenness. Whatever meaning lies behind the day, enjoy it to the fullest, as we all know what holiday lies on May 6th...National Hangover Day. Lots of people ask me whether acupuncture is good for hangovers. The answer is yes, it can be used to alleviate the symptoms of a night of overindulgence. Before scheduling an appointment, however, there are some things you can do yourself to keep the next-day misery at bay:
1. Eat. Try to eat once the drinking stops, and focus on filling foods that contain lots of carbs. These will absorb the alcohol and make the next morning much more pleasant.
2. Before you pass out/go to sleep, force yourself to drink as much water as you can. Dehydration is the enemy here. Alcohol depletes your body of liquids, which you will experience as a skull-crushing headache in the morning.
3. When you wake up, eat something filling, and if possible, spicy. The hot peppers will stimulate endorphins, which will help to kill the pain. And the food will absorb the alcohol that is still simmering in your digestive tract. Also, drink a sports drink (like Gatorade or Powerade) to replenish the electrolytes lost during all that partying. And although you may feel willing to sell your soul for a cup of coffee, the caffeine will only make things worse. Like alcohol, caffeine is a dehydrator, and that lack of fluids is what caused all this misery in the first place.
4. Exercise. You may feel that exercise is the last thing on earth you want to do, but trust me, it will make a huge difference in how you feel. Again, you are stimulating those naturally pain-killing endorphins, which will relieve the headaches, body-aches, and fatigue.
...And if all else fails, my office is open from 10:00-2:00 tomorrow! :)
